Pet Scam
With the COVID-19 pandemic, many households adopted pets. With the rise in furry friends came the rise in online pet scams. The BBB Scam Tracker from the Better Business Bureau reported almost 4,000 instances of pet adoption fraud in North America throughout 2020.
In 2021, CTV News Toronto reported that a woman in Ontario lost over $2000, while City News reported another Ontario family lost $4000, both cases for the purchase of pets that never existed.
While pets provide a sense of comfort and joy in these unsettling times, it is important to avoid online scams. CTV News Toronto recommends arranging in-person meetings or video calls with the seller before pets are purchased.
