SMP Law – Parental Alienation Series – Part 2
What is Reunification Therapy?
The term reunification therapy has become increasingly popular in family law cases. Reunification therapy is essentially a therapeutic process designed to rebuild and repair a relationship between a parent and a child, usually due to a form of alienation by the other parent. Reunification therapy usually occurs through counseling but it can also be completed as a program, such as the Family Bridges program.
Do You Need Reunification Therapy?
If you do think you require reunification therapy with your child, here are a few suggestions:
1) Be sure to find a reunification therapist who is skilled in reunification therapy and has worked on this type of therapy before. This is a unique and very specific type of therapy and you want to be sure a therapist knows the best strategies for this type of therapy.
2) Begin the reunification therapy immediately. As time goes on, the relationship between you and your child can become more damaged. Time is of the essence if you want to increase your chances of being successful.
3) If the reunification therapy does not feel like it is working or you or your child does not like the therapist, do not be afraid to ask for another referral to a different therapist. Not everyone is a good fit, and it is important to find the right fit for you and your child.
4) Ensure that you and the alienating parent receive individual therapy. Whether you are the alienated parent or the alienating parent you will benefit from working with a therapist to address your respective role(s) in this situation.
